PS1 (7-8) – 4 Students demonstrate an understanding of states of matter by …explaining the effect of increased and decreased heat energy on the motion and arrangement of molecules. PS2 (7-8) – 7 Students demonstrate an understanding of heat energy by…explaining the difference among conduction, convection and radiation and creating a diagram to explain how heat energy travels in different directions and through different materials by each of these methods.
National Standards:
Context of Lesson:
The reason for this lesson is to help the students become critical of science in the media. Most students do not have the skills necessary to differentiate between fact and fiction in this highly technological society. The specific goal will be to have them pick apart the fascinating piece of science or technology from the film. They are then to determine if it truly exists. If so what are the limitations and has the creator of the film altered the way in which the technology truly exists.
Opportunities to Learn:
Materials:
TV or Projector (With Screen)
DVD player or Computer
Inconvenient Truth DVD
Inconvenient Truth Movie Guide Sheet
Classroom Environment:
Student will be at their lab tables watching the film.
Cooperative Learning:
NA
Differentiating Instruction:
Students with a document disability will be given the Inconvenient Truth Guide Sheet with portions of it filled in.
Depth of Knowledge:
Students will answer various questions throughout the class period that have a DOK of Level 1(Recall).
Objectives:
Students will be able to identify examples of conduction, convection, and thermal radiation to 90% proficiency.
Instruction:
Opening:
Students will be given a short entrance quiz on what part of the movie that involved conduction, convection, or thermal radiation was most interesting
Engagement:
The students will first be reminded that at any time the have a question about the content we can stop the movie and discuss . Also at various point of the movie we will be stopping to discuss key items. Also during the movie the students will be filling the Inconvenient Truth Movie Guide (See Attached File).
Closure:
The students will need to hand in their movie guide at the end of class. There will also be a reminder to keep working on their projects and that we will watch the second part of the movie tomorrow.
